Turkey Tips - Fall Decoy Setup
When you have scattered longbeards and are setting up, putting a jake decoy out might help. It certainly won't hurt. Decoys can be useful whether the scattered birds are old gobblers, a band of late-hatching jakes from two springs back, barren hens or hens with their young-of-the-year offspring. Anytime a turkey sees another turkey - or two or three - an increased sense of security buttressed by curiosity, is the likely result.
You should set your decoys according to the season of the year. Decoys for fall hunting should be placed as if they are making their way through the woods, feeding as they go. Obviously, decoys of strutting jakes or a hen and jake breeding make no sense.
