Turkey Tips - Fall Hunting, Stalking the Flock
While the most common fall hunting tactic involves scattering turkeys then calling them back, it is quite possible to call birds in without flushing them first. As you ease through the woods, watch out for fresh sign and look ahead for movement. It is also a good idea to pause and call periodically. Should you get a response, either set up and begin working them or try to get in a better location before calling. You'll have to make that call after assessing the situation.
Incidentally, walking and calling is a good fall tactic and can be approached in several ways. In ridge country, ease along just below the ridgeline and occasionally peak across. Should you come across really fresh scratching, determine which way it looks like the birds are heading and follow along. Often it is possible to get within hearing (and sometimes seeing) range of flocks you are trailing. Doing this in soft, newly -fallen snow is a cinch.
The general message is a straightforward one: It is possible to establish contact and get within range of wild turkeys without relying on a flush.
