Conservation - More on Millet
“If you’re looking for a quick
growing plant that produces abundant
seed used by wild turkeys and other
wildlife, millet is the ticket,”
says Bryan Burhans, NWTF Director of
Land Management Programs.
Depending on the variety, millet
requires only 40 to 90 days to
mature, produces an abundance of
seed and is an excellent choice if
you want to create great dove
hunting opportunities, as well as
providing fall food for wild
turkeys. Quail also relish millet,
making it a good addition if the
management of healthy coveys is one
of your objectives.
Millet is an annual crop, therefore,
it will generally require replanting
each year. To plant, simply prepare
your seedbed by harrowing, then
drill or broadcast seed at the
recommended rate for the variety of
millet being planted. Finish by
lightly covering the seed, using a
drag or harrowing lightly. Millet
grows well throughout most of the
United States.
